Off-Road Drive Up Mount Ainos
Begin your ascent through the dense Black Fir Forest, part of the Mount Ainos National Park. Mount Aenos is an exceptional natural preserve boasting a forest of the unique black firs of Kefalonia (abies cephalonica). Aenos became widely known as the Monte Negro of Greece due to the dark color of the trees that seemed black when seen from far away.
Guide Story: “Mount Ainos is nicknamed Monte Nero (Black Mountain) for its dark fir trees. These trees are found nowhere else in the world and have survived here since the Ice Age!”
Zoodohos Pigi Monastery
The Monastery is located at an altitude of 1200m in the National Park of mount Ainos, around 30 km away from Argostoli, with unique views on the southeast of the island. The way up is by a rough road starting from the village of Atsoupades on the main road connecting Argostoli to Poros and passing through Arginia. The location feels like a paradise for nature lovers and hikers, featuring beautiful trails, wild and rare species of flora and fauna and breathtaking panoramic sea views.
Ainos National Park
The National Park of Ainos is close to Argostoli and Sami and is the smallest national park in Greece. It was created in 1962 in order to protect the indigenous specimen of elati (Abies Caphalinica), which covers a ground of 1973 hectares.
Optional Hiking to some magnificent view points
The park is a paradise for hikers, especially on its East side, which is more raw and rugged. The flora is rich of endagered species like endemic varieties of orchids. The fauna is very interesting too, with reptiles and little mammals (foxes by instance), which are very rare elsewhere on Kefalonia or on other islands.
Return to Your Location
Conclude your tour with a scenic drive back, reflecting on the mountain’s wild beauty and the warmth of Kefalonian hospitality.
