St. George’s Caste
The Fortress of Agios Georgios is located at the village of Peratata on a 300 m altitude and was probably constructed during the 12th century AD by Byzantine Emperors. It’s about 16.000 m2 and its surrounding walls are approximately 600 m long. Inside the walls there were public and private buildings, churches, food and ammunition warehouses, barracks, hospitals, prisons and water tanks.
Argostoli
Argostoli is the biggest town and the capital of Kefalonia. The harbor is always a bustling and picturesque scene, especially at sunrise when the fishing boats are all coming in with their fresh catch. The promenade is a beautiful way to enjoy a waterfront stroll at any time of day as well. Sometimes you can even spot sea turtles in the waves here or near the fishing boats.
St. Theodore’s Lighthouse
The Lighthouse of Saint Theodore, is a fully functional lighthouse and a landmark of the island! Located 3km from Argostoli in a picturesque location near Katavothres where you can admire the amazing sea view overlooking the gulf between Argostoli and Lixouri.
Katavothres Watermill
Katavothres, are a geological wonder that can’t ever be fully explained to this day! It’s a unique site unlike any other. It’s thought that they are a complicated series of underground caves and passageways beneath the island. The sea waters rush through the rocks and they end up in the majestic Melissani Lake before returning back to the sea. The power of the ocean here was once used as free electricity for mills and the giant wheel constructed to harness it can still be seen.
